Overview

 
 

Moms Who Enterprise (formerly known as Moms Who Hustle) offers a 12-week, tech-enabled financial literacy and entrepreneurship curriculum to aid income-constrained, single or expectant mothers ages 18 to 30 in realizing their entrepreneurial ambitions by gaining the financial literacy and business skills needed to start and grow sustainable micro-enterprises.

From May to September 2017, Moms Who Enterprise was piloted  in four (4) major markets across the nation including: Baltimore, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Washington, DC; and Newark, New Jersey.   In total the 12-week intensive program graduated fifty-two (52) women, providing mothers with the tools necessary to achieve economic stability.

Highlights of national program achievements include: 

 

Business and Financial Management

  • By the completion of the 12-week program, 63% had completed formal business plans. 
  • 82% of participants had a savings account separate from their checking account which was a 30% improvement from pre-program assessment.
  • 48% felt more comfortable with using budgets and roughly 40% felt confident they could handle financial emergencies as they arise because they had started to save.
  • 50% of participants post-programming felt confident they could scale their business with what they learned.

Personal Confidence

  • Upon completion of the program, 87% of all program participants agreed they felt more confident
  • 54% felt confident that they could now network with new people, which was a significant improvement over pre-program assessment responses.
  • 46% felt they could confidently deliver an elevator pitch about their business within 30-seconds or less as compared to 13% starting out.

$5,000 in Micro-Grants Awarded

Moms Who Enterprise programming in Washington DC awarded $5,000 in micro-grants to five women representing businesses in areas of childcare service, community nail salon, clothing line, and children’s books.

More than 10 million low-income working families with children are headed by single working mothers, representing roughly 39% of low-income mothers. - (U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey)

While multicultural women are the fastest growing segment of entrepreneurship, they often have more limited resources, support, and access to opportunity than their white or male counterparts.

This is particularly challenging for women from lower-income communities, often single mothers, who struggle to overcome cycles of poverty and often lack positive role models and supports needed to succeed. 

Moms Who Enterprise focuses on single or expecting women who seek to improve their financial opportunities through financial planning and entrepreneurship.

Continuing our Impact

 
 

Walker's Legacy Foundation intends to expand our programming from four (4) cities in 2017 to a total of nine (9) cities by 2020.  We continuously seek partnerships with organizations, government entities, and companies to aid us in this mission and to support  the mission of the Walker’s Legacy Foundation.
